General advice
When thinking about risk mitigation, prevention is just as important as coming up with advanced strategies and hardware solutions. It’s important to know the capabilities of your system, to maintain it regularly (both software and hardware parts), and ideally to have a back-up system available. It is also important to keep the system secure, and to only allow access to people who really need it.
Below you will find general actions you may take to improve your system’s readiness. The actions are detailed in the following sections (maintenance, redundancy, security).
- Get information on your PNT system (for example: used hardware, antenna location, receiver location, processed signal types, users and connected systems)
- Get information on the personnel responsible for the PNT system (for example: personnel with extensive PNT knowledge, personnel with access to the antenna, personnel with access to the software backend, personnel responsible for PNT usage in connected subsystems)Get information on the maintenance schedule of your PNT infrastructure
- Find out if there is an external contract for maintenance (manufacturer support, or software support contract)
- Survey the state of devices/software, check incident reports
- Make sure your hardware is behind locked doors
- Check the software parts of your system, and make sure it is not easily accessible to everyone outside, and even inside your network
- Check what options your hardware enables (manual, data sheet)
- Check antenna compatibility with targeted frequencies
